Book 12. Dimple Hill: List of Characters

With Miriam’s departure from London and her stay with on the Roscorla’s farm, a dozen or more new faces are added to the cast of Pilgrimage.

Alfred Roscorla The younger of the two Roscorla brothers.
Amabel When Miriam visits London late in the book, Amabel shows off her wedding dress and Miriam then accompanies Amabel and Michael Shatov to their civil ceremony.
Mrs. Bailey The landlady at Miriam’s former lodging on Tansley Street.
Bennett Brodie Sarah Henderson’s husband. Corresponds to Arthur Batchelor.
Beulah A cousin of Miriam’s who lives in Babington (Abingdon).
Mrs. Boole Mrs. Mary Everett Boole, who wrote on a variety of scientific and social topics for some of the same journals as Dorothy Richardson.
Mrs. Bradley A Quaker woman who speaks at a Friends’ meeting Miriam attends with the Roscorlas.
Mrs. Joshua Bullingham The mother of a pupil who stayed with the Roscorlas before Miriam. Her portrait hangs in Miriam’s room.
Mrs. Cameron The housekeeper at the dental practice at Wimpole Street.
Dr. Densley A Scotsman and Eleanor Dear’s doctor, first introduced in The Tunnel. Now a Harley Street surgeon, he treats Sarah Henderson in this book.
Donizetti The owner of the restaurant Miriam frequented during her time in London.
Dora Taylor Wife of George Taylor and co-publisher of a journal Miriam (and Dorothy Richardson) contributes to. Corresponds to Florence Daniel.
Eliza A village girl and maidservant at the Roscorla’s.
Elphick An acquaintance of the Roscorlas.
Mrs. Farmer Another cousin of Miriam’s living in Babington.
Florrie Broom The younger of the two Broom sisters, former pupils and now friends of Miriam.
Frankie The “village idiot” treated in a kindly manner by the Roscorlas.
George Taylor Husband of Dora Taylor and co-publisher of a journal Miriam contributes to. Corresponds to Charles Daniel.
Grace Broom A former student of Miriam’s at the Perne school and now a friend.
Mr. Hancock A dentist and Miriam’s employer. She remains working for him for over eleven years. In Dimple Hill, we learn that Miriam first met him in Babington when she was still living at home.
Mrs. Harcourt A woman Miriam met at the pension in Oberland who writes her about a place to stay near Lake Geneva.
Harriet Henderson Miriam’s youngest sister, married to Gerald Ducayne.
Mr. Henderson Miriam’s father, whose bankruptcy triggers her having to go to work at the start of Pilgrimage.
Selina Holland A spinster and night-school teacher with whom Miriam shared the flat in Flaxman Court.
Hypo Wilson A writer of growing fame and husband of Alma Wilson. Corresponds to H. G. Wells, whom Dorothy Richardson had an affair with and may have gotten pregnant by, though the child was later miscarried or aborted.
Jan and Mag Long-time friends of Miriam’s who room together and represent the independent “new woman” on the turn of the 20th century. Jan is based on Elie Schleusser, a German translator, and Mag on a daughter of the Heath family for whom Alice Richardson (Eve Henderson) once worked as a governness.
Mr. Lahitte A Frenchman who Miriam helped in translating a speech in Deadlock.
Miss Lonsdale The Englishwoman who runs the pension near Lake Geneva recommended by Mrs. Harcourt. Miriam goes to stay there in March Moonlight.
Mr. Mayne A Quaker student who comes to recouperate at the Roscorla’s late in Miriam’s stay.
Michael Shatov A Russian Jew who began taking English lessons from Miriam. Their relationship then developed intellectually and romantically, though Miriam ultimately refused him. He remains a friend and ultimately marries Amabel in Dimple Hill. Corresponds to Benjamin Grad.
Paul Botinsky A relative of the Roscorlas who lodges at the same house as Michael Shatov.
Mrs. Peebles A little, old, deaf lady with whom Miriam lodges while visiting Chichester.
Rachel Roscorla The oldest of the three Roscorla siblings, who has decided to dedicate her life to caring for her family and their farm.
Raphael Phayre A writer Amabel encounters.
Richard Roscorla The older of the two brothers, tall, dark-haired, and manager of the family farm. He and Miriam feel an attraction for each other, but he chooses to remain focused on the farm.
Mrs. Roscorla A widow and mother to Alfred, Rachel, and Richard.
Sarah Henderson Miriam’s oldest sister, married to Bennett Brodie. Corresponds to Frances Richardson.
Miss Shillingfold A friend of the Roscorlas who irritates Miriam.
Great Aunt Stone An elderly relative of Miriam’s.
Tony Amabel’s brother, who attends the civil ceremony at which she and Michael Shatov are married.
Vereker A Cambridge man who Miriam met in Oberland.
Mrs. Wheedon A neighbor of the Roscorlas to whom Miss Shillingford refers disparagingly.
